Following our AGM on Wednesday 25th Oct, the Colgan Heritage Committee has set about planning for 2018. Owing to the Irish Open Golf Tournament being held at Ballyliffin Golf course on the first weekend in July it was decided to change the date for the 9th annual weekend. Colgan Heritage Weekend for 2018 will now take place from Friday 17th to Sunday 19th of August. These dates coincide with the dates for National Heritage Week.
Next Year will be an important year for Heritage as 2017 has been designated as ‘The European Year of Cultural Heritage’.
The aim of this is to encourage more people to discover and explore Europe’s cultural heritage, and to reinforce a sense of belonging to a common European family. The emphasis will be on cultural heritage’s value to society, its contribution to the economy and the importance of safeguarding it for future generations.
Cultural heritage surrounds us in our towns, our landscapes and our archaeological sites. It is found not only in literature, art and objects but also in crafts, skills, stories, too, songs and films. To this end we have chosen as our theme for 2018, ‘Carving a Future form our Past’. We are now in the process of contacting speakers for the weekend who, we hope, will do justice to the theme and provide a platform for questions and debate.
We look forward to welcoming everyone to Colgan Heritage Weekend in 2018 and we guarantee a weekend of reflection, debate and enjoyment.
May we also take this opportunity to wish you all a very Happy Christmas!
